About the YWCA Wheeling

two women smile while sitting on stairsThe YWCA Wheeling is a member association of the Young Women's Christian Association. With more than 25 million members in 122 countries, the YWCA is the oldest and largest women's organization in the world designed to empower women and eliminate racism. Located in the heart of downtown Wheeling, at 1100 Chapline Street, the YWCA Wheeling seeks to positively impact the local community and the region, while eliminating racism and empowering women. It offers a number of programs including:

-The Y Not Repeat Boutique (a boutique that accepts gently used donated clothing from the community and helps clothe women going back into the work force)

-Resident and Homeless Program that houses single women over the age of 18 in a community style residence

-A Cultural Diversity & Community Outreach program that helps the community at large with cultural diversity issues

-The Family Violence Prevention Program, a multi-faceted and diverse domestic violence program geared towards ending the cycle of abuse.

For the last 33 years, the program has offered support and advocacy to victims of domestic violence in Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel Counties, by offering civil and legal court advocates, a child advocate, an employability advocate, three teen dating violence advocates, Madden House (our domestic violence shelter), BIPPS - Batterers intervention and prevention - 32 week court-ordered educational classes for men who batter and FOCUS - behavior modification for women who batter, 911 save a lifeline, supervised visitation and exchanges, and transitional housing for survivors and their children.

The YWCA Wheeling is one of 300 associations in the nation and has been a prominent part of the Northern Panhandle since 1906.

Elected were Karen Stakem, president; Dea Kennen, president-elect; Colleen Mindzak, vice president; Penny C. Evans, secretary, and Heather Lapp, treasurer.

The group also elected Evans, Hali Exley, Kim Florence, Mindzak and Barbara Pettit to second three-year terms as board members. Dr. Carolyn Darling, Angela Fennerty, Patty Kota, Tina West and Nini Zadrozny were elected to their first three-year terms on the board.

Family Violence Prevention Program Gets Wheels
